Description

Large Art Deco Limoges porcelain service by Alfred Lanternier, 59 pieces.

We can see the strong similarities between this service and the designs by André Mare for the decoration and Jean Luce for the forms. We know that Jean Luce claimed these forms as his own, attributing them to Lanternier (see the book *Jean Luce* by Sung Moon Cho, pages 54 and 82).

This service, crafted from very glossy white porcelain, is of exquisite workmanship. The shapes are a delicate blend of curves, elegant pedestals and cylindrical knobs, the whole decorated with platinum fillets and bands.

The medallion featuring a stylised tree motif of scrolls, enlivened by grey lines, spots and rectangles, appears on every piece and on the inside of every dish. The typical colours of this period, the 1920s, are burgundy, light grey and platinum. Platinum fillets or broad bands surround the central medallion on all plates and shaped pieces, as well as on the rims of the plates and dishes.

The bases of the vegetable dish, soup tureen, salad bowl, serving dish and dessert plate are characteristic of Jean Luce’s design: tall and straight with a fluted edge at the base and platinum decoration.

The cylindrical knobs are also decorated with platinum bands, and a small fluted edge is found at their base, a feature also seen in Jean Luce’s designs.

The decoration and forms were very modern for the period of the 1920s and 1930s. Lanternier produced luxury tableware, and here we have a fine example of this beautiful work in exceptional quality.

Alfred Lanternier’s father, François Frédéric Lanternier, founded the factory in 1857, which became Alfred Lanternier & Co in 1890. After the war, Lanternier continued to produce luxury porcelain and won an award in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. They produced porcelain for two design studios: Pomone (Le Bon Marché) and La Mestrado, the design studio of Galeries Lafayette in Paris. In the late 1960s, they merged with Gérard Dufraisseix & Abbé GDA Limoges.

In generally good condition for its age. The platinum on the medallions shows signs of wear (scratches from a knife) but there are no chips in the decoration. Only the soup tureen has a chip on the underside of the lid’s rim, which is barely visible when the lid is in place.
